Years ago I had a Howa 7mm magnum, back when they were imported by Smith & Wesson. The fit and finish was awesome, the wood was magnificient, wasn’t bad for accuracy…but it drove me insane with the two position safety. The action ran like glass but that was not a good thing; the merest bump when the rifle was slung – would knock the bolt open and flip the shell out. It was the damnedest thing – no other rifle I’ve had would do that.
I suppose you don’t have to worry about that with a bench or target gun, but in a hunting rifle it was downright unacceptable.
I’ve sold a few of those S&W versions over the years. They came with the nicest wood. The new Howa’s have a three position safety now. Works well. Trigger is nice too.
